Geoff had a dream – to transform his dull lackluster garden into a vibrant floral paradise. And that dream started with dahlias.
These gorgeous, colorful blooms were the perfect choice for injecting new life into Geoff’s outdoor space. Known for their stunning diversity of colors, shapes, and sizes, dahlias offer seemingly endless variety to delight the senses. Once Geoff decided on dahlias, his imagination ran wild with possibilities.
After doing a bit of research, Geoff learned that dahlias thrive in zones 8-11 and prefer full sun exposure. Since he lives in zone 10, with plenty of sunshine, Geoff knew his climate was ideal. Next came selecting the perfect spot – a raised garden bed along the backyard fence that gets light all day long.
Geoff amended the soil with compost and manure to improve drainage and nourish the dahlias. These flowers have tuberous roots that store water, so excellent drainage prevents rot. He also added bone meal for phosphorus, an important nutrient for healthy bulbs and blooms.
Once the bed was prepped, it was time for the fun part – picking his dahlia varieties! Geoff chose a diverse mix of colors, forms, and sizes. Some of his selections:
-
Peaches ‘N Cream – a gorgeous fluffy peach colored bloom on tall stems perfect for cutting.
-
Gallery Art Deco – a bold, brilliant red dahlia with unique, pointed petals.
-
Café au Lait – a classy, two-toned dahlia blending pastel pink and buttery yellow.
-
Purple Tai – a rich royal purple pompom style dahlia, ideal for edges and containers.
-
Kelvin Floodlight – a cheery, bright yellow dinner plate dahlia as big as your hand!
Geoff purchased tubers from a reputable online seller and eagerly awaited their arrival in spring. He soaked the tubers in water for a few hours before planting to triggers early sprouting. After digging holes and placing the tubers a few inches deep, Geoff patted soil firmly around each one.
Within weeks, green shoots poked up through the dirt – the first sign of the botanical magic to come! Geoff made sure to water the dahlias deeply as they became established. He also applied a balanced liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks to fuel the rapid growth phase.
As summer arrived, Geoff was overjoyed to see his dahlias burst into bloom. Wave after wave of vibrant color ignited his garden. The blooms were so abundant that Geoff cut armfuls to give to friends and decorate his home.
Caring for his dahlias became a labor of love for Geoff. He pinched off spent blooms to encourage more flowers. Staking the tall varieties kept them standing upright after summer storms. Geoff inspected regularly for pests like earwigs that could damage his precious dahlias.
By fall, Geoff’s garden was utterly transformed. Dazzling dahlias in sunset hues of orange, pink, red, and purple brought the space to life. Neighbors stopped to compliment Geoff’s beautiful dahlia patch.
As autumn frosts loomed, Geoff carefully dug up the tubers and stored them in a cool place for winter. He already couldn’t wait until next year to plant more dahlias. Geoff’s garden will be forever transformed with the joy and beauty that dahlias bring.
