Im new to this forum and Im really interested and curious on the scented geraniums. I read some articles online that there are many varieties of scented geranium, i. e you have some that smells like, lemon, rose, peace, chocolate etc. Anyway judging from the flowers of the geranium, I think I may already have some in my backyard. These plants grow on the ground and have pink to red flowers. The flowers and leaves don’t smell at all. Infact even the flowers look quite dud. So, I was just wondering. Is there a geranium that doesn’t smell? How can you tell the difference between scented and unscented ones? Is the scent strong, or do you have to put your nose right up to the flowers to smell it? Can you really smell the difference between scented and unscented ones? Like, a geranium that smells like coconut: can you really smell the coconut? Or a geranium that smells like peach? It’s so hard to believe.

The fragrance of geraniums is one of the most delightful aromas found in nature. With their compact form sporting bright green leaves and cheerful blooms, geraniums not only look beautiful but also emit a scent that is undeniably captivating. So what exactly makes geraniums smell so good? Let’s explore the unique components that make up their lush, floral aroma.
A Distinctive Mix of Roses and Mint
The scent of geraniums is often described as a mixture of roses and mint. The floral notes resemble the sweet fragrance of roses while the mint provides a refreshing twist. This distinctive blend creates a rich, multi-layered aroma that is both invigorating and soothing.
The rose fragrance comes from compounds like geraniol citronellol and linalool which are also found in rose oil. The concentration and balance of these components determine the type of rose scent. Some geraniums like the damascena variety have a rich, intense rose fragrance similar to the damask rose. Others like the centifolia geranium exude a lighter, more delicate scent reminiscent of the French rose gardens.
The minty nuances originate from molecules like menthone and isomenthone. These add a cool, bright note to the overall aroma. The resulting mint and rose fusion produces a lush sensory experience that is undeniably unique to geraniums.
Subtle Citrus Undertones
In addition to the prominent rose and mint notes, geraniums also exhibit subtle citrusy undertones. Compounds like geraniol, nerol, and citronellol contain lemony characteristics that infuse the fragrance with a hint of freshness. This accentuates the herbaceous minty aromas and creates an invigorating scent profile.
Think of it as a lemon twist enhancing the mint and rose fusion, The tangy citrus prevents the florals from becoming too heavy or cloying It uplifts the aroma to create a well-rounded scent that is lively yet smooth and mellow
The Soothing Power of the Scent
The lush fragrance of geraniums has a soothing, calming effect on the mind and body. Inhaling the floral richness instills a sense of tranquility while the minty freshness is revitalizing. This makes geranium oil popular in aromatherapy for promoting emotional well-being.
Studies show the aroma can lower stress, anxiety and depression. It also enhances cognitive function and concentration. The balanced scent profile activates olfactory receptors that initiate positive neurological responses. Simply put, you can’t help but feel peaceful and content when surrounded by the gorgeous scent of geraniums!
