The Better Homes and Gardens 105 Gallon Oval Step Trash Can is a popular kitchen garbage can choice for its convenient step opening mechanism and stainless steel durability. However, the step pedal opening feature can sometimes malfunction and prevent the can from opening properly
As an owner of this trash can model myself I’ve encountered this issue and figured out some solutions to get the can working again when the step opener is jammed. Here are some troubleshooting tips to try if your Better Homes and Gardens oval step can refuses to open.
Check for Obstructions Under the Lid
The first thing to check is if there is something stuck under the lid, blocking it from opening fully. Trash bags get wedged up there occasionally. Remove the trash bag and inspect underneath the lid. If there is debris or dirt buildup, clean it out so the lid can pop up freely.
Ensure the Damper is Working
There is a small damper mechanism attached to the step pedal that slows the lid opening. Make sure this component is still intact and functioning. The damper is a black plastic piece mounted behind the metal step pedal. When you press the pedal, it should swing down smoothly. If the damper is cracked or doesn’t move, the lid may not open right. Replacement dampers are around $10 if yours is broken.
Lubricate Hinge and Internal Mechanism
With frequent opening and closing, the various hinges and internal springs can get sticky and prevent the lid from popping up fully. I like to lubricate the main lid hinge, the damper hinge, and the internal spring mechanism yearly with a spray lubricant like WD-40. Just a light coating is all that’s needed to make the parts move freely again. This often fixes sluggish opening issues.
Check for Broken or Fatigued Springs
The main spring that lifts the lid when you step on the pedal can eventually weaken or snap after prolonged use. Try removing the bag and pushing up on the lid manually with your hands. If the lid feels very heavy and doesn’t lift easily, the main lift spring may need replacing. You can find replacement springs for around $7 online.
Additionally, there is a smaller tension spring inside the step pedal housing. If this spring becomes fatigued, it won’t pull the pedal back out fully after it’s pressed, preventing the lid from opening. Again, replacement pedal springs are inexpensive and fairly easy to install.
Ensure Lid Shut Stays Are Moving Smoothly
On each side of the rim there is a small lid shut clip that slides in and out to keep the lid closed. If these get stuck and don’t slide smoothly, they can prevent the lid from popping open. Try lubricating them with a light oil or silicon spray. If the slides are just worn out, new replacements can be found for around $2 per slide.
Check for Broken or Obstructed Pedal
Examine your step pedal – is it cracked or damaged? Can it press down fully without obstruction? Anything limiting the pedal motion can keep the lid shut. Try removing the pedal to inspect for broken components or debris around the pedal housing. Replace any damaged pieces. The step pedal should press down a half inch or so when fully actuated.
Adjust or Tighten Lid Hinge Screws
Finally, if the lid seems aligned improperly or loose on the hinge, try tightening the hinge screws or adjusting them. Having the lid sit just slightly tilted forward can prevent it from opening right. Tightening down the hinge screws or manually positioning the lid might be all that is needed. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws.
